Samsung Medical Center Conducts Asia’s First Surgery Using the Latest Da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgical System

Samsung Medical Center successfully performed Asia’s first surgery using the latest robotic surgical system, the Da Vinci 5. The procedure was led by Dr. Seong Soo Jeon, Director of the Robotic Surgery Center and Professor of Urology, who operated on a prostate cancer patient with excellent results.Currently, Samsung Medical Center is operating a total of nine robotic surgical systems, including the newly introduced Da Vinci 5. The Da Vinci 5 is distinguished by its ability to enable more precise surgeries compared to previous models of robotic surgical systems. With its ergonomic design, which includes curved armrests and an immersive viewer, the Da Vinci 5 is expected to reduce physical fatigue for medical staff while providing patients with a safer surgical environment.

Since surpassing 1,000 cumulative robotic surgeries in 2010, Samsung Medical Center has experienced an annual growth rate exceeding 24% since 2014, reaching 5,000 surgeries by 2017. In January 2024, the hospital achieved a remarkable milestone of 20,000 cumulative robotic surgeries.Throughout the year 2023, the center performed approximately 3,400 robotic surgeries, gaining international attention. This achievement ranks 9th among robotic surgery centers worldwide. Specifically, it was ranked 2nd worldwide for prostatectomy procedures and 3rd for both gastrectomy and mastectomy procedures.
