[2008.11.8] Professor Park Kwan gives a presentation on the outcome of facial spasm surgeries

Professor Park of the department of neurosurgery in Samsung Medical Center received much interest while giving a presentation on the outcome of facial spasm surgeries at the 9th Asian-Oceanian International Congress on Skull Base Surgery held from November 6th to the 8th in Pusan Paradise Hotel.

He promoted this field in presenting ‘Microvascular Decompression for Hemifacial Spasm: Lessons Learned after 1,000 operations’ in the seminar on ‘Microvascular Decompression Update’ and received praise and recognition from world renowned doctors such as Keki E. Turel of India and Takanori Fukushima of U.S.

He also presented ‘Patterns and risk factors of hearing loss after microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm’ in the ‘neurovascular compression syndrome’ session and led this session in-depth. Other presentations were ‘Microsurgical and Radiosurgical Outcomes for Meckel’s Cave Meningioma Presenting with Trigeminal Neuralgia’ and ‘Multiple Rhizopathy.’

Doctor Park Kwan had already invited Peter J. Jannetta, who played a pivotal role in the establishment of microvascular decompression, to an international symposium celebrating the 1000 operations of microvascular decompression performed by his team. This occasion became another opportunity to establish microvascular decompression in Samsung Medical Center as competitive in the world stage and one of the most productive in the world.

This international congress is managed by the Asian-Oceanian International Congress on Skull Base Surgery and it is a very big international congress held every two years. It is a place where specialists from various fields including neurosurgery, otorhinolaryngology, and plastic surgery can gather and share ideas.
